ELECTION OF BROTHER SUPERIOR… We unite in prayer

The solemn celebration of Pentecost this year has particular importance for Lasallians. We call on the Spirit to be present in the Church and enlighten the Brother Capitulants in their voting to elect the Brother Superior for the next seven years.

Tomorrow on the evening of Pentecost Sunday, the Capitulants will gather together in prayer in the Sanctuary of the General House in Rome, close to the relics of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The straw votes having been carried out these last days, on Monday 28th in the morning, the Capitulants will be called together for the definitive vote. This will be the only occasion on which the doors of the Chapter Hall are closed. Only the Capitulants with the right to vote will remain. There will be no translators, no members of the Communication team, no sound technicians, no session secretaries, no logistic support persons… no computers nor mobile telephones.

During this weekend, we are called to unite ourselves in prayer.

CONTRIBUTION OF THE YOUNG BROTHERS

The presence of young Brothers from the five continents in this Chapter has been noteworthy. Their valuable interventions, especially in the working groups has been an enrichment. These are promising moments for the future.

As the fruit of their collective reflection, they have passed on two documents to the Capitulants. The first is a general one, showing their challenges, horizons and lines for future action. The other, much longer, gathers together their contributions to the six working Thematic Groups in the form of “hopes” and “fears”, including two transverse themes on the Identity of the Brother and Formation.

Their geographical locations are: Salomón Abebe (Eritrea), Jean H.Claude Abou (Lebanon), Patricio Bolton (Argentina), Efrain Dionisio (Guatemala), Shahzad George (Pakistan), Vincentiu Ghiurca (Romania), Ivan M. Pinchevsky (Ecuador), Mamy Olivier (Madagascar), Pubudu Rajapaska (Sri Lanka), Vicente Ruiz (Spain), Michael Eamon Sanderl (USA), Salvatore Santoro (Italy) and Jean B. Tran Dinh (Vietnam).

NEW ASPECTS OF GOVERNMENT AND ANIMATION

The Chapter Assembly approved the newly presented Report of Group ‘F’ by a majority of votes in favour. The original title, ‘Government’, is now called ‘Government and Animation.’

The ideas that had arisen in the discussions in the plenary Assembly had been included. As regards the written notes submitted, the members of the Group tried to balance them up, as some ideas were contradictory with regard to others.

The new presentation resembles the first. There are differences in style, editing, typefaces used, and reformulation of certain espressions. The Introduction and Conclusion have both been changed. Without changing the content of the first edition, the additions and omissions have brought greater clarity.

At the suggestion of the Group on Association, there has been added a new Line of Action concerning the International Lasallian Association for Mission.

There are significant new ideas concerning animation of the Regions, which have direct implications for the General Council. Amid the applause of the Capitulants as they saw the result of the vote on the electronic screen, the moderator commented, “that is what we call consensus.”
