ELECTION OF THE GENERAL COUNCIL

The work of the Capitulants is now focused on the General Council.  The Chapter has approved new structures concerning Animation and Government.  The process that will be followed is in accord with these new norms.

There will be two days of straw voting by Regional groups.  This system of election is new, in so far as the Superior General may make known his own choices after analyzing the ballots.  The Capitulants are free to vote for any Brother, whether or not he is a Capitulant.  In the last Chapter of 2000, one of the present Councilors, Miguel Campos (Cuba) was not a Capitulant nor was he in Rome when he was elected.

The first round of voting will be for the Vicar and then ballots will be cast for eight Councilors, three of whom will reside in Rome and for five others who will become Regional Councilors.

MORE THAN 800 LOG ON VIA INTERNET

There was an air of expectation in the Aula Magna as they waited to hear Brother Alavro’s Address, following his re-election as Superior General.  In his address, he said, “you are a gift from God…counting on you is a gift”.  The Superior was interrupted twice by applause.  His last words were: “Brothers and Lasallians, let us be faithful to the Spirit”, this was followed by a prolonged applause.  The Address was rich in content.  In a few days, the video will be available on the de La Salle web.

The Superior’s address was followed by more than 800 via the internet.  This was an historic moment, as this is the first time that Lasallians all over the world were able to view the interior of the Aula Magna.  We continue to receive messages of congratulations for the timely and informative coverage of this Chapter.  We have received confirmation from various Continents of the excellent sound and image reception.
