ASIA-PACIFIC EDUCATIONAL
CONFERENCE (APLEC)
Held at La Salle, Kowloon, Hong Kong, 17th-22nd December 1998
APLEC is the annual Lasallian educational conference of the Pacific-Asia Region. Some 120 delegates from the Region
participated in this third APLEC held at La Salle, Kowloon in Hong Kong. The theme of APLEC, "The Lasallian
Shared Mission in the context of religious pluralism" was developed by Brother Gerard Rummery, assisted by
Brother John D'Cruz as facilitator for the discussion groups. Besides using the Conference booklet which contained
four important messages to introduce this APLEC (Br. John Johnston,
Br.
Gerard Rummery, Br. David Liao,
Br. Patrick Tierney),
the conference concentrated on the General Council text of The Lasallian Mission of Christian Education: A Shared
Mission and a specially prepared booklet which looked at important events and texts which opened up the topic of
interreligious dialogue.
APLEC, organized and coordinated by a working committee drawn from Lasallian Hong Kong schools but especially the
staff of the host school, La Salle Kowloon, was adjudged an outstanding success. The chief presenter declared it
the best organized conference of the many at which he had presented in Europe, North America and Asia. This opinion
was supported by the written evaluations presented by the delegates.
