Message from Br. Patrick Tierney, Chairman of the Organizing Committee
When our Hong Kong delegates went to APLEC '94 in the Philippines, our eyes were opened to the riches and diversity of our Lasallian presence in the Asia-Pacific region. APLEC '96 in Singapore carried on the fine work and now it is our turn to carry the torch forward.
The theme of APLEC '98 promises to lead us into interesting and challenging waters. Nowhere else in the world perhaps, experiences the Lasallian Shared Mission in such diverse and varied circumstances as we experience it here in the Asia-Pacific region. This Congress provides us with a precious opportunity to examine, assess and experience our shared mission in practice. And when we return home, may we be inspired to carry out our mission with renewed vigour in the spirit of faith and zeal.
I wish to welcome you all here to Hong Kong, now a Special Administrative Region of China. This is the first Lasallian gathering of such a nature here and we are honoured by your presence and encouragement.

It would take far too long to thank people in detail. To all of you who have helped us in any way, seen or unseen, a sincere thank you. A special word of thanks to Brother Joseph Kiely of Singapore, who drew on his experience of organizing the last APLEC, to help us a great deal.
Our local APLEC Organizing Committee has worked long and hard. I have not heard a single word of complaint from them. We were also fortunate that Brother Gerard Rummery and Brothers Vincent and John consented so readily to be our Chief Presenter and facilitators respectively. |
