The District of Lwanga dedicated a new Student Brothers residence, De La Salle Hall, on April 7, the Church's designated feast of Saint John Baptist De La Salle. The new facility provides a residence, a study facility with classrooms, and a chapel for forty Student Brothers and five staff. The Superior General of the Brothers, Br. John Johnston, officially dedicated this vital facility for the Lwanga District. The District is named in honor of St. Charles Lwanga, a Ugandan saint. Names of individual halls were chosen from among the Brothers saints and blessed.
Although the Lwanga District, founded in 1997, is the youngest in the Institute, it is one of the fastest growing. Currently there are forty scholastics, who come from Kenya, Eritrea, Sudan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Malasia. In addition, the District has 30 novices currently in the Novitiate. The Lwanga District covers Ethiopia, Eritrea, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa and is the largest geographical District in the Institute.
In his remarks at the Dedication, the Brother Visitor of the Lwanga District, Br. Dominic Ehrmantraut, thanked Brother John Johnston for his development of the Institute in the five countries which now comprise the District. He noted that "the needs in Africa are great and the need for the DeLaSalle Brothers' presence and participation in the church through education, especially to the poor, is imperative to the young churches of Africa." Brother Dominic also recognized the work of Brother Bud Knight, who has served as the first Brother Director of Novices for the English speaking sectors of Africa from 1989 to the present.
Br. Dominic also thanked the many guests, benefactors, and in particular the Planning Committee for the Dedication of De La Salle Center. Brother Thomas Sheehy, Director of the Scholasticate, was ably assisted by Brothers Giuseppe Perilli, Belayneh Medhanit, Paladius David, Mussie Tecle, Geremew Haile, Wole Olabanjo, Moses Tighil and Paul Emuria. The meal of celebration was coordinated by Brother Belayneh Medhanit and Ms. Joan Haan, a Lasallian Volunteer. Among the guests for the occasion were Brothers Thomas Johnson, Visitor, Midwest District, Brother Christopher Cummins, Visitor, District of Ireland, Brother Yves Lecocq, District of Proche Orient, Brother Noel Bois, Director of SECOLI, and Brothers Terry Collins and Lavinius Lavor, District of Great Britain.
Congratulations to the Charles Lwanga District on this memorable occasion. |
