The World Union of Lasallian Former Pupils
June 30, 1999 |
The World Union of Lasallian Former Pupils (UMAEL, Union Mondiale des Anciens et Anciennes Elèves Lasalliens, Lasalliennes) held the second tetrennial Assembly, May 20 to May 23, 1999, this time in Rome. The theme was 'Information Technology and the Lasallian Mission'
In welcoming the participants, Mr. Josef de Bock, outgoing President, made a brief review of the four years since the first assembly in Jerez De La Frontera. He went on to show how the theme of the assembly related to the present concerns of the Institute - it had been the theme of one of the five colloquia - and also to the concerns of past pupils as parents and as adults playing a responsible part in society. (These ideas were enlarged upon in the key presentation by Br. Anton de Roeper, Assessor).
The Very Reverend Brother John Johnston, Superior general, addressed his welcome to all and went on to recall the principal thoughts that he had shared with the World Union in Jerez, 1995. He strongly urged that the Lasallian spirit was outgoing, that a worthy Lasallian education programme for today must contain a significant element of social service and should issue in an effective awareness of the importance of fraternity and inclusion.
Guest speakers included His Eminence Cardinal Stafford. His Excellency, Fuad Kabazi, Libian Ambassador to the Holy See and member of EXLALI (Ex-Allievi Lasalliani de Libia), Sr. Antonio Pires, President of the World Organisation for Former Pupils of Catholic Schools (OMAEC), Sig.ra Federica Germani Rossi, Delegate for the Youth Section, OMAEC, and Mme. Dominique Archambeaud, President of the French section of AMASC (Association of Former Pupils of the Sacred Heart Schools).
Discussions covered two main areas:
(1). applications of the ideas put forward in the various presentations
(2). suggested changes in UMAEL statutes allowing for a widening of the membership to include non-federated Associations.
The following were agreed to:
· Membership of non-federated Associations of Lasallian former pupils is accepted and such associations have the right to be present at Assemblies.
· Voting can be extended to any group of Associations belonging to a District even though the group is not registered as federated.
M. Jean Pierre Hascöet of Quimper, France, was elected President for the coming four years.
The General Assembly ended with participation in the Holy Father's Mass for the Vigil of Pentecost in St. Peter's Square. |
