43º capítulo

The first step in the election of the Superior General began today. In the midst of the Chapter's work, the first "sondage" occurred. During this "sounding", each Brother Capitulant was asked to write down a maximum of 3 names without priority or weighting, no name being put down more than once. The names were tallied and the results of the count were given to the capitulants. Tomorrow a second "sondage" will take place. For the second sounding vote, each Capitulant will put down a maximum of 2 names, without priority or weighting, no name being put down more than once.

Beginning Thursday evening at 9 pm, an all night vigil will take place, providing time for prayer and reflection before the voting for the Superior takes place on Friday, June 2. This will take place according the Rules of Procedure that have already been accepted by the General Assembly. The following are some of the Articles that pertain to the election:

Article 66

1. The voting slips prepared for the election of the Brother Superior General will carry the text of the formula of commitment prescribed by Canon Law. Before casting their vote, either the Capitulants will read the formula of commitment together and aloud, or the President alone will read it aloud, while the rest of the Capitulants unite themselves with him in silent reading.

In addition to the Capitulants, only the Brother Consultants and the Archivist will be present. They will also be bound to confidentiality.

2. Each Capitulant will then write on the voting slip the full official name of the Brother he believes should be elected. Then, beginning with the Scrutineers, Capitulants will, each in turn, place their voting slip in the ballot box provided.

Article 70

If a Brother obtains an absolute majority of votes, the Brother President of the Assembly - or the Coordinator, if the President himself is named- announces the election, but only after securing the acceptance of the elected Brother. If the latter believes he has valid reasons for declining the office, the Assembly will accept his decision.

Article 71

1. As soon as the election is officially announced, the newly elected Brother Superior General takes over as the head of the Institute and as President of the General Chapter.

2. Each of the members then comes forward to give a sign of his fraternal support. Other Brothers present in the Generalate will be given a similar opportunity at some appropriate time. The Assembly decides on a time to go to the chapel and offer thanks.

As soon as possible, I will post the results of the election on the net.
