On March 11, 2001, two-hundred thirty two martyrs from the Diocese of Valencia, among them 5 of our De La Salle Brothers from the District of Valencia, will be beatified by Pope John Paul II.

They were men of faith who followed the Gospel road.
They have reached the end of that road: the resurrection.
They walked the road of proclaiming the Gospel to children and young people in a remarkable way. And on this road they took the decisive step that led them to the cross of martyrdom.

They invite us also today to travel the Gospel road. To participate in their beatification and to rejoice in this event is a way of saying that we ourselves want to walk along this same path and respond to their invitation.

Some of us will make a pilgrimage to St. Peter's Square while others will join in by way of various communication media.

All are invited to participate in the following events:

Saturday, March 10, 2001
5:00 P.M.
Reception for pilgrims and opening ceremony in the Vatican's Paul VI Hall.

Sunday, March 11, 2001
9:30 A.M.
Beatification ceremony in St. Peter's Square presided by His Holiness John Paul II.
It is estimated that 20,000 pilgrims will be present for this celebration.

6:00 P.M.
In our Generalate all of us Lasallian pilgrims will gather to sing Solemn Vespers of thanksgiving.

Monday, March 12, 2001
9:00 A.M.
Inside St. Peter's Basilica all the pilgrims from the Diocese of Valencia will celebrate a Eucharist of thanksgiving. This will be presided by Cardinal Angel Sodano.
This will be followed by an audience with Pope John Paul II for all the pilgrims.

The events of March 11, 2001 in Rome invite us to take heart for our own Gospel journey.

Each house in the Institute has received a poster on which appear the faces of the newly beatified Brothers with sunflowers in the background.

The martyrs have flourished along their journey:
Always seeking God.
Proclaiming the Gospel.
Teaching the poor.
Together in community.
