Your Home in Rome - Welcome!

Rome, February 5, 2002
Br. Edward Hofmann, Guestmaster
Since its beginning the 'Motherhouse' has been hosting groups of visitors to Rome. Initially those guests were De La Salle Brothers from around the world who came for retreats, academic courses and Institute meetings.

Over the years other religious orders began to use the Generalate for similar purposes; priests, sisters, and brothers from multilingual congregations found our simultaneous translation facilities very useful for their periodic sessions of self-government known as 'general chapters.'

Slowly and over time, as space permitted and rules relaxed, Brothers began to bring their friends, families and students to the 'Generalate' in order to enjoy the offerings of Imperial Rome, Christian Rome and Modern Rome.

With the onset of the third millennium the Brothers established a legal entity in the Italian state of Lazio to welcome guests in a more professional manner. Doing business as "Residenza DeLaSalle" we are now able to arrange for groups or independent travelers - students, pilgrims and educators - to use our facilities at reasonable prices. Several types of accommodation are available.

Independent Travellers

Those traveling alone, with their families or in small groups can make use of our en suite rooms with single, double or triple occupancy with an Italian style breakfast of hot beverages, rolls and a variety of condiments. Some travelers opt for 'half-pension' which includes the evening meal at 7:30 pm or 'full pension' which includes both the main meal at 1:00 pm and the evening meal.

Professional and Religious Groups

Religious pilgrims and professional educators have been lodged at via Aurelia, 476 for decades. Our expanded service continues to provide simultaneous translation facilities of various sizes, large and small meeting rooms, chapels, computer resources, dining facilities and other necessities.

Youth Groups

Our newly constructed 'youth hostel' accommodates about 120 youngsters in six dormitory rooms, each with nearby shower and bathroom facilities. A few semi-private sleeping areas are available for chaperones. Students may use our bed linen or they may bring sleeping bags for a small price reduction. Overnight includes breakfast; a meal plan is also possible.

Common Ground

All visitors to "Residenza DeLaSalle" may make use of our extensive grounds for prayer, outdoor meetings, walking, jogging, and other recreational activities including tennis and basketball. We also have several fields for more active sports.

Culinary Delights

In September 2001 the new management of "Residenza DeLaSalle" acquired the services of two outstanding young chefs from one of Italy's most renowned culinary schools. In addition to providing tasty and nutritious meals for sometimes upwards of 350 people, Stefano and Sergio, have been able to show remarkable adaptability, providing for special occasions and accommodating cultural tastes.

Location

"Residenza DeLaSalle" is situated in a wonderful area of semi-suburban Rome. Just a few hundred steps to the "Cornelia" stop of the "A-line Metro" and a dozen or more bus stops, our address on via Aurelia assures easy access to most of Rome: just 15 minutes to Vatican City; 25 to Stazioni Termini, the main train station; most everything a pilgrim or student tourist wants is between these two points. Our immediate neighborhood offers a variety of dining venues (including no less than ten ice cream stands), several department stores and scores of boutiques as well as two reputable hospitals, three seminaries and the training center for Italy's national police force. Just a few streets away is the "Doria Pamphili Park" which offers acres of open space and recreational activities.

Management

"Residenza DeLaSalle" conducts business under the direction of four DeLaSalle Christian Brothers. Brother Gabrielle of Torino is the General Administrator. Brother Marcellino from Rome handles the day to day management of the kitchen, buildings and grounds. Brother Robert, from the New England area of the USA, is the Finance Manager and Brother Edward from Baltimore, USA acts as Guest Master. He is assisted by Brother Emmanual of Malta and Brother Remy of Southeastern France in registering and welcoming our guests.
