The Brothers Celebrate 125 Years in Chile: In April 1877 the Brothers of the Christian Schools arrived in Chile to take charge of the work which the Church entrusted to them in our country. There were four religious that the superiors entrusted to begin their work in this land.
The Brothers arrived in the Americas from France, their country of origin; first they came to Canada, then to the United States, Ecuador and Chile. Years ahead of the actual arrival, José Joaquín Pérez M., President of the Republic, had authorized the congregation's legal existence in Chile.
Since that long ago month of April in 1877 until today, the Brothers, according to needs, have worked in different places in our land. You can see the current situation by visiting the following web site: http://www.la-salle.cl/portada.htm
DLSL's Ruby Anniversary: De La Salle Lipa (Philippines) celebrated its Ruby anniversary in February 2002 with a show called La Salle 2002 and a fair. De La Salle Lipa has a present population of 7400 students ranging from the nursery to graduate school.
From a basic education institution founded by the Christian Brothers in 1962, De La Salle Lipa has become one of the leading educational institutions in the Southern Tagalog Region, now offering basic, tertiary and graduate level education. It has been 40 years of excellent Lasallian education!
The celebration carried the theme "40th Green" and began with a tree planting activity. This year's celebrations will also focus on the institution's high school and college alumni, whose role in the enhancement of the institution's reputation will be emphasized through the unveiling of alumni walls featuring their graduation pictures. They will also spearhead a free clinic for the urban poor and hold sports activities and kite flying contests. For further information see: http://www.lasalipa.edu.ph/
CIL to meet in Laval, near Montreal, Canada: The next session of CIL (International Lasallian Center) will be held from May 27 to June 21st. The theme of the session is Accompanying Senior Brothers. This is the first time that a CIL session will be held outside of the Generalate in Rome. Br. Michael French, the Secretary for Continuing Formation will be coordinating a team of experts, including Br. Miguel Campos, General Councilor, who will be conducting a section concerning the Spirituality of Ageing.
The sections of this CIL session have been designed for Brothers who work with ageing Brothers. This CIL session will help them in their ministry.
Future CIL programs include a session beginning in Nov 2002 in Rome dealing with Charism for brothers in midlife. In 2003-2004 there will be a session on the formation of Brothers who work in formation.
Lasallians 4 Kids: Brother John Johnston, Director of Education for the United States/Toronto Region, reports that at Heuther 2001, Promoting the Rights of Children , Mr. Jonah Edelman asked Lasallians, "Where do we go from here for our children?" He encouraged us to join STAND FOR CHILDREN and participate in STAND FOR CHILDREN DAY 2002.
Inspired by this invitation, a small committee decided to organize a national Lasallian day to promote the rights of children. It will be called LASALLIANS 4 KIDS. The date is May 15, feast of our Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle. May 15 is also the United Nations International Day of Families. This day is an opportunity for us to speak and act corporately as the association of Lasallians of the United States/Toronto Region. It is also an opportunity for our students, administrators, teachers, support personnel, parents, board members, former students, and all other Lasallians to learn more about the issues and commit themselves to action. Álvaro Rodríguez Echeverría, Superior General, informed the District of Antillas that, for the next four years, it was to be a Delegation rather than a District. During this time, the Delegation will be in contact with other Districts in the area in order to develop a larger District which will provide for a broader support system for the Brothers.
