The Brothers at the Casa Celebrate Founder's Day:
On May 15
the Brothers of the Generalate celebrated the Feast of Saint
John Baptist de La Salle. The
Superior and many of the General Councilors had just returned
home from RELAF (Africa Region) where there had been a
meeting of the General Council with the Regional Visitors'
Conference of RELAF.
The feast day was celebrated with a
mid-day Mass in the Founder's Chapel followed by dinner. The
Brothers were joined by a number of visitors to the Casa Generalizia as well as by the Guadalupana Sisters who work
in the Generalate. |
General Council Meeting in Africa:
Brother Superior and the General council
met with all of the Visitors, Auxiliary Visitors, Delegates
and Presidents of the Region of RELAF in Douala, Cameroun,
from the 8th to the 13th of May. The meeting was chaired by
General Councilor Brother Yemanu Jehar and coincided with
the conclusion of Brother Superios's Pastoral Visit to RELAF
However, visits to Madagascar and to Nigeria will only occur
in the next few months.
This is
the third meeting of this type since the 43rd General
Chapter. In November 2001, similar meetings were held in
Brazil with the Region of RELAL and in Belgium with the
Region of RELEC. |
Papal Audience Honoring Brother's 300th Anniversary in
Italy: On Saturday, May 18th, Brothers and others joined
Pope John Paul II in the Papal Audience Hall to celebrate
300 years of the Brother's presence in Italy. There have
been numerous events planned to mark the third centenary of
the arrival of the first Brothers of Christian Schools in
Italy. In the autumn of 1702 the first two Brothers arrived
in Rome. The school started in Rome by Br. Gabriel Drolin
was the first Lasallian school founded outside of France. |

Opening in Argentina-Paraguay:
On April 7, 2002, the anniversary date of the death of John
Baptist de La Salle, the Lasallians in the District of
Argentina-Paraguay witnessed the birth of a new ministry,
the Saint Hector Valdivieso School. Brothers and lay
partners, administrators, teachers, and students from
ministries all over the District were involved in three days
of activities which included meetings of community directors
and headmasters, sports competitions, and pastoral ministry
activities for young people. There was a festive Eucharistic
liturgy and then there was the dedication of the school that
will serve 250 young boys and girls from the Malvinas
Argentinas area located on the outskirts of the city of
Cordoba. For

150th
Anniversary Dinner in Singapore: On
March 29, 1852, six De La Salle Brothers arrived in
Singapore after a 15-week journey by sea. Three came from
France, and three came from the USA. The first Brothers
started St. Joseph's Institution in Singapore and St.
Xavier's Institution in Penang, the first of what would go
on to become a network of Lasallian schools across the
Malaysian Peninsula as well as Sabah and Sarawak.
On May 11, 2002, the 150th Anniversary
Dinner for St. Joseph's Institution was held at the Suntek
City Center in Singapore. President S. R. Nathan, President
of the Republic of Singapore and Brother William Mann, Vicar
General, were Guests-of-Honor. Also in attendance was Dr.
Tony Tan Keng Yam, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of
Defense.
At the anniversary banquet St. Joseph's
Institution, one of the top secondary schools in Singapore,
was recognized for providing a value-added, all-around
education to boys of all races and religions. |
Dedication of "La Salle" Professional School in Rumania:
On 18 May, the "La Salle" Professional School was
officially opened in Peldesti, Rumania. The school offers
courses in carpentry, electricity, and secretarial skills,
and the financing of its construction was assisted greatly
by the people of Spain. Brother Vicar General William Mann
and Brother General Councillor Juan Pablo Martin joined with
the Brothers and Lasallian Family for this event since it is
an important milestone in the re-emergence of the Institute
in Eastern Europe. |
