Solidarity
Award from the "Human Rights Institute of Catalonia" awarded to the
Cintra Colegio in the person of Brother Joan Lluís Casanovas i Mañà:
Last March 3, in the beautiful setting of the Catalan Parliament,
the Solidarity Award was presented to the Cintra Colegio, which
is located in a marginalized neighborhood in the historic center of the
city of Barcelona. The award was accepted by the school's headmaster,
Brother Joan Lluís Casanovas.
This school was begun seven years ago, and it is dedicated to serve boys
and girls who have been marginalized due to school truancy. In fact,
this condition is needed to enroll at the school. Currently there are 50
students between the ages of 12 and 16. Some 40 have already finished
their studies at this school, and 21 of those are in work training or
doing studies elsewhere. The program came into being ten years ago
through the efforts of 11 men and women religious, all from different
congregations involved in education, under the light of the Gospel, to
respond to the needs of neighborhoods like this one.

La
Salle University, Bogota: Here are some photographs of participants
in the residential weekend programs offered at La Salle University in
Bogota, Colombia. All first-semester students entering the academic
programs offered by the University are involved in these sessions.
These weekend programs are attended by about 1,700 students over the
course of the semester. The goal is to deepen their Lasallian values and
to have them become involved in study groups.
In the picture we see one of these groups as they play a game in which
the object is to capture five territories (Faith, Fraternity, Justice,
Service, Commitment) and each territory in itself is a lesson about a
good Lasallian practice. One picture shows the Mass during one of the
student gatherings. This one was designed especially to allow for
reflection about the changes in the life of the student. The goal was to
be of help in the student's full integration into university life and to
deepen his Lasallian identity.
Another photo shows one of the musical groups during orientation week.
This particular day was held at the La Salle University's headquarters
in Floresta. In attendance were parents and first-semester students from
all the different academic disciplines. Here the objective was to
integrate the family into the higher education of the new Lasallians.
This is accomplished by parent participation in the network program
which is managed by the Vice-Rector for Human Promotion and Development.

Chapel
Altarpiece in La Salle-Bonanova: A new altarpiece has been completed
for the community chapel at La Salle, Bonanova, Spain. The altarpiece shows an
image of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Brothers of the
Christian Schools (De La Salle Brothers). The image is accompanied by
images of a boy and a girl, who symbolize the million students worldwide
under De La Salle's influence.
The
paintings on the altarpiece are dedicated to the Brothers who have stood
out for their spirituality, as recognized by the Catholic Church.
The Church declared as saints Brothers Jaume Hilari Barbal, Miguel
Febres Cordero, Mucien Marie Wiaux and Benilde Romaçon. Brothers
Scubillion Rousseau and Arnould Régie have been declared blessed.
The Church is currently looking into the process of sainthood for ten
other Brothers whose names are also recorded in the altarpiece.
The altarpiece paintings are also dedicated to the Brothers who have
given witness to their faith as martyrs:
The Saint Martyrs of Turón: Aniceto Adolfo Seco, Augusto Andrés
Martínez, Benito de Jesús Héctor, Benjamín Julián Alonso, Cirilo Bertrán
Sanz, Julián Alfredo Fernández, Marciano José López and Victoriano Pío
Bernabé.
The Blessed Martyrs of Almería: Amalio Zariquiegui, Aurelio María
Villalón, Edmigio Primo, Evencio Ricardo Alonso, José Cecilio Rodríguez,
Teodomiro Joaquín Sáiz and Valerio Bernardo Herrero.
The Blessed Martyrs of the French Revolution: Salomón Leclercq,
Roger Faverge, Léon Mopinot and Uldaric Guilaume.
There are 165 from Spain who gave their lives in Spain from 1936 - 1939
in witness to their faith. Their beatification has yet to happen.
There are also 28 Brothers from other countries who have died in violent
circumstances in witness to their faith.
This altarpiece was made to commemorate the 350th birthday of De La
Salle and the 50th anniversary of his having been proclaimed patron of
teachers and the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the school's
main chapel.
