An update about Hurricane Katrina: All the Brothers are safe and sound. The St. Paul's School in Covington is scheduled to re-open September 19th. All of the pine tress are gone from that property, but the school building and Brothers’ house are in good shape. Christian Brothers School (CBS) of New Orleans will start back on October 3rd but at Rummel High School in the city of Metairie. Although the CBS school building is in good shape, the civil authorities are saying it will be Christmas before the city of New Orleans is re-opened. Rummel High School will also share their buildings with Jesuit High School. Rummel will run from 7:30AM until 3:00 PM and Jesuit from 4:00PM until 9:30 PM.

There is not any hope that the De La Salle High School in New Orleans students will start back until after Christmas. Most of the students and teachers are displaced and have relocated to other areas of Louisiana, but the school administration is in touch with them. Again, the school did not suffer any major damage. The Magnolia community in Lafayette is over crowded, but we are doing well. Our electric and grocery bills will be strained!

Final Profession for Six Brothers from the District of Madrid: A group comprised of six Brothers made their final profession in the Institute of the Brothers last August 28, District Day, for the District of Madrid.

The ceremony was presided over by Brother Superior General. Also present were the Brother Regional Coordinator, two Brother Visitors, Brothers from the District, and a large group of relatives and friends of the professed.

The celebration began with a Eucharistic liturgy in the chapel of the house in Griñón. The newly professed formulated and then signed their commitment to associate themselves with the Institute for life.

After the Eucharist there was a festive meal, a toast was raised for the newly professed, and their parents were presented with a souvenir gift of the occasion.

Congratulations to Brothers Marcos, Julio, Luis, José Antonio, Jesús, and Pedro Antonio!

International Council of Young Lasallians: The International Council of Young Lasallians (ICYL), met in Rome from July 27-July 30, 2005. The council is comprised of 11 youth from various regions of the world and the Vicar General, Br. William Mann. During their time in Rome, the council members had the opportunity to watch the newly circulated DVD titled “Together and by Association in the Service of the Poor” and reflect on the themes it highlights. There was also much work completed on the ongoing projects of the council, including the promotion of the publication of articles pertaining to Young Lasallians, specifically on the Institute website and in the Intercom publication. The council will also begin using its database of contacts within the Lasallian world to inform people when new articles have been posted on the website. The ICYL is currently focusing on the upcoming International Symposium of Young Lasallians, to be held in Rome in July 2006. The council is working with and advising the organizing team of the International Symposium as it prepares to host the event.
