Lasallian Volunteer (LV) Gathering at the San Miguel School, Camden, New Jersey: Lasallian Volunteers play an important role in educating the children of San Miguel, Camden. This was the message from Br. Bill Johnson to the group of friends gathered at the school on the combined Feasts of St. La Salle and Pentecost, May 15, 2005.

Guests toured the school and socialized with new and long-time friends. Short remarks were offered by current volunteer at San Miguel, Chris Swain, and by LV Alum of Kansas City Dave Shronk. Then Br. Bill told about the school's goal of responding to the challenging needs of the students and their families in one of the poorest cities of America. Volunteers contribute their skills, dedication and resilience to assist in the classroom and to anchor the after-school program. After some discussion, Jim Ruck described the LV program today and the opportunity presented by the O’Shaughnessy foundation three-year, $300,000 Challenge Grant to expand this successful program. Through these funds a recruiter will be added to the LV staff this summer to help meet the increased requests for volunteers coming from other schools like San Miguel.

The District of San Francisco initiates Young Lasallians Program: The District of San Francisco is very proud to announce the approval of its Young Lasallians Program. In alignment with the age criteria of Young Catholics adopted by the International Council of Young Lasallians (ICYL); Young Lasallians (YL) are individuals between the ages of 25 and 35. While the organization of a Young Lasallians movement is primarily intended for those individuals currently working in District apostolates, Young Lasallians are also those individuals closely connected to these apostolates and the Lasallian Mission.

The Purpose of the Young Lasallians is to gather Young Lasallians throughout the San Francisco District for prayers, reflection, mutual support, and action for the sake of the Mission; strengthening that Mission through our association with one another as well as strengthening our association to this Mission by our identification as Young Lasallians.

The formation of Young Lasallians also prepares a formal structure of association and support for the Mission for current Lasallian Partners and former Lasallian Volunteers; as well as Lasallian Youth, and Lasallian Collegians who, more importantly, will be entering this age group in large numbers in the coming years.

The Young Lasallians group of the District of San Francisco will be invited to a 2-3 day retreat during the summer of 2005. Participants will also have discussions about whether or not they feel a need to have a formal structure and regular gatherings that would continue to bring Young Lasallians together. In addition, the retreat will encourage those participating to organize local gatherings of Young Lasallians.
