MEMPHIS – USA - BR. JOHN JOHNSTON - HEALTH UPDATE: Br. John has completed approximately six months of chemotherapy for colon cancer. He recently had a follow-up PET scan and CAT scan. The results are very encouraging. The cancer has responded so well to the chemotherapy, that there was no further evidence of cancer on these studies. The cancerous areas that were seen on the previous PET scan last fall are gone. This does not mean that Br. John will stop treatments, only that the medication regimen has been quite effective.
The scans also revealed some “new” news. There is evidence of liver cirrhosis with fluid accumulation in the abdomen (ascites). Cirrhosis is a scarring or thickening of the normal liver tissue. When this occurs, the liver does not work as well as it should and one consequence is ascites. Br. John will be taking a diuretic pill twice a day to decrease the fluid and control additional accumulation.
There are many causes of cirrhosis. Br. John had additional blood testing done to determine the cause of his cirrhosis. After the cause is determined, appropriate treatment will begin. The extreme fatigue he has been experiencing will hopefully dissipate as the cirrhosis is treated.
Your continued prayerful support is still the best medicine as Br. John continues to pursue good health. |
COTTONERA - MALTA - ANNIVERSARY OF THE MAGNIFICENT MOSAIC OF DE LA SALLE: De la Salle College Malta, celebrated the 40th. Anniversary of the magnificent mosaic of De la Salle.
The function was attended by a number of past students going back to 1959 to 1967. In those days the Brothers used to prepare students for H.M. Dockyard.
It was customary in those days for the students who entered the Dockyard to donate their first salary to the Brothers ... hence the monument. The monument was designed by a famous artist . Prof. Emvin Cremona and built in Italy.

ROME – ITALY – POSTULATION: Two items of good news. The first: the Secretary of the State of the Vatican has officially announced that on October 28th 2007 there will be the Beatification of 498 Servants of God, Martyrs in Spain during the religious persecution of the years 1936 – 1939. In the group there will be 58 Brothers, belonging to the Districts of Madrid (14) and of Catalonia (44). A booklet in four languages with a short biography of each one of them has been prepared.
The second is the publication of a booklet entitled “Lasallian Saints of Yesterday and…Tomorrow”. It is written in a very captivating way and presents all our saints, blessed, venerables and servants of God. A DVD is part of it. It would make a nice gift for the members of Signum Fidei, for teachers and for all other Lasallians that work with us in the apostolic field. The Postulation office has copies.
