Blessed Honorato Andrés

Andrés Zorraquino Herrero was born on April 18, 1908. He entered the junior novitiate in Cambrils on July 27, 1920. On August 15, 1924 he took the habit in the novitiate at Hostalets de Llers.

Following his religious and pedagogical training in the Cambrils scholasticate, he began his apostolate in Tortosa and then went to the Gracia School in Barcelona in 1931 and on to the Bonanova School.

He was quiet, understanding and pious and always thoughtful when dealing with his Brothers and students. He was a man of personal prayer, a simple man who was competent as a teacher.

In July, 1936, Brother Honorato suffered the same fate as the community at the Bonanova School: On April 19 the community Brothers had to leave and they took refuge wherever they could. Along with Brothers Florencio Martín and Ambrosio León, they all decided to return to their home area of Aragon which meant they had to pass through Valencia. They began the journey on foot and when they reached Valencia they realized that it would not be possible to continue on to Aragon. In Valencia he found accommodations in the house of Doña Mercedes Marco Adelantado at 4-49 Buenos Aires Street where he was joined later by Brother Florencio Martín. These three Brothers intended to carry on with their profession. As they showed their documents to the magistrate they were recognized as religious and this was reason enough to decree their execution.

Lord Jesus: Make us as strong as oak trees.
Make us free like our Brother Andrés.
Make us humble and kind.
Make us sturdy in character and youthful in our convictions.
Today we give you thanks for De La Salle,
his Brothers and teachers.
They help us to form ourselves as persons
and to acquire culture and education.
Give us strength and generosity if you ask us
to devote our lives to you in serving young people and children.
Amen.

Beatified March 11, 2001.
