The Area where the LTTE leadership was suspected of hiding was continuously bombarded during the last 20 days of the Civil War causing much damage to life and property. The civilian casualties were very high. The refugees started pouring into the government controlled areas carrying whatever they could. In the process children lost their parents and husbands their wives. At present there are over three hundred thousand people in temporary camps set up for the purpose. According to the latest statistics there are over 2000 children between ages 4 and 10 loitering in the camps.
The Bishop wants to remove these children as soon as possible and to hand them over to different Religious congregations to look after. He has asked the Brothers of Sri Lanka to look after between 75 and 100 children.
