Program Description: Three opportunities exist for volunteer service.

Tutoring of students in grades 6-12 at the L.E.O. Center, Monday through Thursday, 2:30-9:00pm, or any part thereof.
Assist teaching of adults on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings.
Teaching or assistant teaching of 6-8 grade students in a 4 week summer school, late June to mid July.

Population Served: Economically disadvantaged youth and adults, 84% African American, 14% Latino, 2% Caucasian-not Hispanic.

Geographical Area of Service: The neighborhoods in and around North and West Oakland.

Gifts/Skills/Talents most needed: Tutors and Teachers, persons with experience in educational settings.

Age Minimum: 18 years.

Minimum/Maximum length of service (and dates volunteers are most needed): 1 week to 3 months.

Housing Accommodations: Two private guest rooms are available in a two-story house, Brothers and Lasallian Volunteers live in this community year-round.

Other Requirements, Expectations and/or Restrictions: A volunteer who lives with the L.E.O. Center community is considered a full member of the community with an expectation of participation in the life and responsibilities of the community.

Benefits: Room and Board for volunteer joining the community, small stipend if the volunteer joins the community for a month or more, supper if volunteer tutors both in the afternoon and evening.

Application Requirements: To join the community, contact should be made at least a month before. To participate in work at the center, but not live in community, contact should be made at least a few days before.

Special Notes: Married couples are welcome, may need to bring a sleeping bag. The community cannot accommodate immersion groups of 8-12 or married couples with dependents.

Volunteers do not need to be Catholic.

Orientation: Apostolate and Community orientation is provided upon arrival.
