Program Description: Cathedral High School is located just northeast of downtown Los Angeles. It offers a traditional college preparatory high school program to boys. The Christian Brothers entered into an agreement with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 1996 to operate the school as a private Catholic institution under the direction of a board of trustees. As a result the academic, athletic, and co-curricular programs have improved and expanded. Population Served: Many of our students come from the oldest and poorest neighborhoods in Los Angeles. With the improvements in the school the student body is becoming more diversified economically and ethnically. The predominate population is Latino. The school enrollment has grown to 585 boys. In 1999, 140 of the families had an income of less than $14,000 a year.
Gifts/Skills/Talents most needed: We need volunteers to tutor before and after school hours, to help in our computer labs, to assist as teachers' aides, and to assist the coaching staff.
Age Minimum: 20 and up.
Minimum/Maximum length of service: Minimum length of service would be one month with participation on campus at least three days each week in that month. The maximum would be for one semester. Volunteers available on a long-term basis could be renewed for additional semester assignments as appropriate. Persons who are local and could volunteer each week over a period of time are also encouraged to contact us.
Housing Accommodations: Those living in the Southern California area would generally be expected to commute. Others, from outside of Southern California, would be considered on a case-by-case basis. Housing with the Brothers' community connected to the school is limited.
Other Requirements, Expectations and/or Restrictions: All of our volunteers are subject to the background checks mandated by the State of California.
Benefits: Meals (as appropriate). For those from outside the area, room and board would be provided in the Brothers' community if there is room.
Application Requirements: At least one months advance notice is necessary for volunteers needing accommodations with the Brothers' community. Apostolic work for volunteers from the area can be arranged on shorter notice.
Special Notes: It is preferred that volunteers be Catholic or come from a background that makes them familiar with the works and spirit of St. La Salle.
Orientation: Apostolic and Community Orientation will be provided upon arrival. |
