Program Description: In Catholic Worker tradition our ministries are.
Works of Mercy: Serving evening meals (gather, salvage and prepare food); provide a small shelter (for families); handle multiple emergency needs (transportation, medical, just be present to another, just sit with another).
Works of Justice: Education, consciousness raising, stance taking (re: hunger, homelessness, violence, foreign policies-especially unjust sanctions).
We choose to live in community, in a neighborhood of poor people, deliberately practicing non-violence and voluntary simplicity, meeting regularly to reflect and pray.
Population Served: Guests are poor, homeless, hungry of the neighborhood-whoever comes in need.
Geographical Area of Service: Kansas City
Gifts/Skills/Talents most needed: Open to being a compassionate presence; justice work; flexible to frequent interruptions and is calm in a crisis.
Age Minimum: 18 or older.
Minimum/Maximum length of service: Negotiable
Housing Accommodations: Can provide housing for volunteers. There are two houses: one that we serve the meals out of and that has a few rooms available on the second floor, and the other is next door and is where the full-time staff/community live.
Other Requirements, Expectations and/or Restrictions: Good energy and good health.
Benefits: Room and board and community experience.
Application Requirements: Contacting us two months in advance is preferred. However, if you do not need housing and just want to volunteer w/o housing, a week's notice is sufficient. We are always looking for local volunteers to help on a weekly basis.
Special Notes:
Can accommodate immersion groups of 6-8 people for a short period of time. It is difficult, but possible, to accommodate married couples.
Volunteers do not need to be Catholic.
Orientation: An orientation to the apostolate and community will be provided upon arrival. |
