Program Description: San Miguel Schools of Chicago is a community of compassion that provides an innovative and accessible education in the Lasallian tradition for children of inner-city families. San Miguel Schools currently operates two middle schools, Graduate Support and Community Outreach Programs — a tri-pronged model designed to improving the outcomes of the children and families we serve.
San Miguel Schools provides a high-quality, faith-based, and nearly tuition-free education to students with financial and academic needs. Our goal is to provide a safe and loving environment where each individual child can succeed. The educational model is based on extensive research and practice: small classroom sizes (1:9 teacher to student ratio); 81/2 hour school days; year-around schedule, 80 minutes of reading and math in the classroom everyday, and an hour of arts/sports/leadership activities every day.
Population Served: Inner-city children and families on Chicago’s South and West Sides, predominantly Latino and African-American.
Geographical Area of Service: Chicago’s South Side Back of the Yards neighborhood, and West Side Austin neighborhood.
Gifts/Skills/Talents most needed: Talents most needed are volunteers who have completed an undergraduate education degree and who come in as certified teachers. We look for people who are flexible, good listeners, who possess good relationship skills, have stamina, strong creative energy, high tolerance for ambiguity, and a commitment to innovation. We want thinkers and doers who are compassionate and understanding of children who come to us with educational deficits. We also want volunteers who can do well in unfamiliar situations, adaptable to cultures not their own, and who can empower the strengths and gifts of others. We are looking for middle school teachers, graduate support staff and community outreach personnel.
Minimum/Maximum Length of Service: Lasallian Volunteers sign-up for a minimum one-year commitment with the option to be extended to two years.
Housing Accommodations: San Miguel Schools operate two separate community houses (one on the South Side Back of the Yards neighborhood and one on the West Side in Oak Park). These communities house Christian Brothers as well as our lay Lasallian Volunteers (approximately 10 people per residence) on a year-round basis.
Other Requirements, Expectations, and/or Restrictions: Teaching and tutoring is one aspect of our ministry together. We see active community participation as essential and life-giving to our mission. We expect volunteers to be involved in and contribute to the community while they are living with us (i.e., share in the cooking, cleaning, and other community tasks).
Benefits: Lasallian Volunteers receive room and board, health insurance, professional development training, and a stipend.
